Omaha/Iowa Hike to Help Refugees

Hike Details
• Hikers will proceed across the Bob Kerry Bridge along the Iowa Riverfront Trail.
• A mid-Hike ceremony will begin at 11:30 am at the Iowa Western Historic Trails Center. Sack lunches will be provided for pre-registered hikers.
• Following the ceremony Saturday hikers return to Heartland of America Park. Weekend and weeklong hikers continue to the Wabash Trace Trailhead.

Choose one of 3 hiking options:
1. Saturday, May 22: 7 miles Omaha, Nebraska to Council Bluffs, Iowa and return to Omaha

2. Weekend, May 22 & 23: 20.10 miles Omaha, Nebraska to Mineola, Iowa

3. Weeklong, May 22-29: 72.8 miles Omaha, Nebraska to Blanchard, Iowa

TRAIN IN ADVANCE!
• Saturday hikers will be walking 7 miles.
• Weekend hikers will be walking an average of 10.5 miles per day.
• Weeklong hikers will be walking an average of 12.13 miles per day.
• This is a strenuous event that you must get in shape for in order to participate safely and with some degree of comfort.
• Be prepared to hike in all the moods of Midwestern spring weather.

Sponsorship
All sponsorship checks must be mailed before or turned in at registration on Saturday, May 22. Checks are made payable to “Hike to Help Refugees, UNHCR”. You also have the option to pay online at www.hiketohelprefugees.org.

100% of your money will be used to provide emergency relief services such as protection, shelter, water and food.

Minimum sponsorship required:
Saturday: $80 per person
Weekend: $160 per person
Weeklong: $560 per person
Make checks payable to: “Hike to Help Refugees, UNHCR” and are due the day of the Hike, May 22.

Hiker’s Fee
Hike to Help Refugees is an all volunteer organization. A hiker’s fee helps cover some of the food costs and administrative expenses for the Hike. There is no charge for grade school or preschoolers.
*Please bring sack lunches for the children.
• Saturday : $25 per person
• Weekend: $50 per person
• Weeklong: $150 per person (paid by Hike to
Help Refugees)
Make checks payable to: “Hike to Help Refugees: Adm.”
Pre-registration for Saturday hikers is due by May 15.

Saturday hikers who pre-register will receive a free sack lunch at the mid-Hike ceremony.
Saturday hikers registering the day of the event: please bring your own sack lunch.
Weekend and weeklong hikers please register by May 8.

Suggested packing list
All hikers should dress for the weather, wear appropriate footwear and bring at least one full water bottle.
Sack lunches will be provided at the Iowa Trails Center mid hike on Saturday for pre-registered Saturday hikers and registered overnight hikers.

Weekend and weeklong hikers
Please have your camping gear and vehicle at the Wabash Trace Trail Head in Council Bluffs on Saturday morning by 8:30. Our “Weenie Wagon” will shuttle hikers to Heartland of America Park in Omaha for the start of the Hike.

Please limit packing to one large backpack or duffle bag, tent and a day pack with water and trail snacks.

Weather preparedness gear:
• Sun hat, sun glasses, sun screen, bandana and bug repellent
• Rain wear
• Warm jacket, hat, extra pair of shoes
• Overnight gear including tent, sleeping bag, flashlight, clothing, toiletries and towel
• Cash for self paying meals (based on adult serving prices), weekend $15, weeklong $80
